Nurse Midwife

A nurse midwife is essentially a registered nurse that gets additional training as a midwife and specializes in women’s reproductive health and childbirth. Nurse midwives deliver infants, provide care to women during pregnancy, the postpartum period (the postpartum period begins right after childbirth and usually ends within 6 weeks), and after the baby is born. Most of the time they work with doctors, social workers, dietitians, physicians etc. A nurse midwife can perform many task but the common ones include: oversee birth complications, help with pain managing, performing episiotomies (surgery that consist of opening the perineum at the time of birth to let the child pass) when needed, educate new parents on infant care, assisting new mothers that are breastfeeding, preparing pregnant women on what to expect during the birthing process and more. Nurse midwives are excellent with building strong relationships, work well during stressful situations, as well as giving support during emotional situations. As any other nursing professions nurse midwives have various places of work such as: hospital, clinics, birthing centers, health department, private practices hire nurse midwives to provide care for patients concerning women's reproductive health and childbirth, even homes. The working hours of a nurse midwife can change depending on the company they are working with and can include eight or twelve hour shifts. Like I said before, depending on the facility, they may be  required to work evening, weekend, holidays, and on-call hours. Nurse midwifery can be a stressful and emotionally draining role to do, however it is quite rewarding to help new parents prepare and welcome their newborn. Now when it comes to the education the requirements are pretty high. In order to become a nurse midwife you must first obtain a bachelor of science in nursing degree (BSN), and pass the NCLEX-RN ( National Council Licensure Examination- Registered Nurses) licensing exam to become a registered nurse, you can then complete a master of science in nursing ( MSN) or a Doctor of nursing practice degree (DNP), then apply and test for certification to become a nurse midwife. It is a job  that can expect an annual salary of 112.830$, nurse midwives are in high demand, and are expected to grow a lot faster than average.
